We’re here to keep you informed about a battery issue with selected FZ-G1 Mk1-2-3 Toughpad tablets.
After initial partners and user advisories in April and May, Panasonic confirmed a battery recall for affected units on 19.05.17. Users are asked to contact Panasonic to register for replacement batteries and the application of a new firmware utility. Prior to receiving replacement batteries, users should apply a software utility from this website OR remove the battery and use main adaptors or approved vehicle docks where possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate your understanding and support.

What units are potentially affected by this issue?
Panasonic FZ-G1 Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 Toughpad tablets with standard batteries manufactured from March 2013 (Note: specific SKU’s below)
When will we receive further information?
Please register your details with Panasonic using the contact form at the bottom of the page. Once sufficient battery stock is available, a Panasonic representative will contact you to make arrangements to ship the required number of batteries to the desired locations.
Why did Panasonic advise the ACCC of this potential issue?
User safety is paramount to the Panasonic Toughbook Group. Despite only a single confirmed issue in Australia, Panasonic are choosing to act in the interest of its partners and users.
Are current FZ-G1 Mk4 Toughpad SKU’s affected by this potential issue?
No. This issue is specific to selected FZ-G1 MK1, Mk2 and Mk3 SKU’s. Furthermore, units with large (9 cell) batteries are not affected.
If you have a mixed fleet it may be prudent to check whether a mk1, mk2 or mk3 battery has been swapped into your mk4 devices. The only affected battery SKU is FZ-VZSU84U.
Are any other platforms affected by this potential issue?
No. This issue is specific to selected FZ-G1 MK1, Mk2 and Mk3 SKU’s. No other models are platforms are affected
Should I return the battery?
After you register your details using the contact form at the bottom of the page you will be contacted by a Panasonic representative and given instruction on how to return your old battery to Panasonic for recycling.
What does the embedded controller update do?
An embedded controller update enhances the battery operation in association with the FZ-G1 battery recall whilst preventing the recalled battery from charging beyond 80% capacity and allowing the replacement battery to be charged to 100% capacity.
Do I need to install the embedded controller update?
Rollout of this package is optional however Panasonic recommends the rollout of this embedded controller update to ensure safety across all FZ-G1 mk1, mk2, and mk3 SKU’s where recalled batteries may have inadvertently been left in the environment.
Can I install the embedded controller update before the battery is replaced?
The embedded controller update can be run either before or after the battery replacement is completed.
How can the embedded controller update be applied?
The update can be run with a variety of command line parameters. Please see the ReadMe.txt file associated with the relevant embedded controller update for your device.
For ease of deployment the update can be run with any user privileges, with or without a BIOS supervisor password and with or without BitLocker implemented.

Can the embedded controller update be deployed remotely?
Windows desktop management systems such as SCCM can be used to apply the embedded controller update remotely. As each deployment environment has its different challenges, please consult your IT desktop team if necessary.
How does a customer remove the battery?
- 1. Ensure the FZ-G1 Tablet is turned off
- 2. Unplug any external power source
- 3. Undock from desktop port replicators or vehicle docking stations if applicable
- 4. Unlock the battery pack as shown in the following (diagram 1)
How will a customer know if their unit is affected?
- • Model numbers can be found by turning the unit over and confirming the product detail label applied to all FZ-G1 Toughpad tablets (diagram 1).
- • The battery pack model details can be found on its reverse (diagram 2).
- • The model number of affected battery packs is FZ-VZSU84U.
